Tacoma Daily Index
When the Daily Court and Commercial Index began publication May 1, 1890, Tacoma was a city of incredible activity: stump-filled lots and rough mud roads led haphazardly toward opportunity. After all, the railroad came here, steam and sailing ships came to Tacoma, the forests were thick with virgin timber, Washington had just become a state, and “Citizen” Train had coined the slogan synonymous with Tacoma even today - referring to it as the “City of Destiny.”
The Daily Court and Commercial Index later changed its name to the Tacoma Daily Index, and took its place as “A Live Business Newspaper” publishing legal notices at “reasonable rates”—a tradition this newspaper paper continues today. Its contents include:
- calls for bids
- court, permit and other public records
- contractor listings
- advertisements
In 2000, the Index computerized its production, but its mission remains essentially unchanged more than 100 years later: deliver timely information - through inside listings and front page editorial content - useful to those in business and commerce.
