Stennis CO bids farewell

Capt. Ronald Reis relieved Capt. Joseph Kuzmick as the commanding officer of USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) in a change of command ceremony in hangar bay two Friday. Reis, a graduate of University of California, Davis, received his commission through Aviation Officer Candidate School and became an aviator in 1987. He is reporting to Stennis after successfully commanding USS Nassau (LHA 4), and said he is honored to be a part of Stennis’ crew. “Today I join a crew and a ship that is squarely between the buoys, sailing true and proud, headed for open ocean,” said Reis. “Capt. Kuzmick, you will be sorely missed by the men and women of this fine warship and the greater Bremerton community.” Rear Adm. Joseph Aucoin, Carrier Strike Group Three commander, presided over the ceremony and commended Kuzmick’s efforts and the progress made during Stennis Bids Farewell to CO his time aboard Stennis as captain.

Bangor Earth Day Fair scheduled

In keeping with this year’s Earth Day theme, “Partnering for a Greener Future,” Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Northwest is partnering with local commands and community organizations to hold an Earth Day Fair on Naval Base Kitsap Bangor. The fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 21 at the brickyard located between the NBK Bangor gym and the theater. The Galley will provide a barbecue lunch for $4.25 to all persons with base access and the Navy Band Northwest popular music group “Passages” will provide entertainment starting at 11 am. Participants will include community organizations, including the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group, the Kitsap County Master Gardener’s Association, the Washington State University Kitsap Small Farms Team, the Kitsap County Beach Watchers Program, the Kitsap County Noxious Weed Control Program, the West Sound Wildlife Shelter, and Kitsap County Solid Waste, in addition to NAVFAC NW energy, recycling and environmental displays. A variety of alternative energy vehicles will also be on display.

NBK Safety nabs CNO Safety Award

Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) picked up a first place for the 2010 Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Safety and Occupational Health Shore Safety award March 15. “We won by having the best safety programs in the Navy, we implemented all the required safety programs and took additional initiatives to decrease the number of mishaps that occur on base,” said Michael Hoyt, the safety manager for NBK. There are six CNO safety awards distributed to different naval base’s each year naming NBK the best as far as safety is concerned. This is a step up from last year, where NBK came in third place. “This is definitely an outstanding achievement for NBK,” said Capt. Mark Olson, NBK commanding officer, when the safety award was presented.

NBK Keyport plays role in Suquamish fish transfer

Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Keyport, Wash., participated in a fish transfer, coordinated by the Suquamish Tribe March 14-15. Located on Naval Base Kitsap Keyport, NUWC Keyport’s pier served as the location for the transfer of thousands of young salmon from a nearby hatchery to the ocean. “We are thrilled to once again partner with the Suquamish Tribe on this important fish transfer that we hope will continue to be an annual event,” said Capt. Stephen Iwanowicz, NUWC Keyport commanding officer. “This is a great example that illustrates the Navy’s commitment to being not only good environmental stewards but importantly to continue to strengthen relationships with our Native American neighbors.”

Patient safety expo bridges medieval with modern

Patients, staff, and visitors at Naval Hospital Bremerton took part in the National Patient Safety Week expo, March 7. NHB went ‘medieval’ all week to celebrate the annual event, setting up an elaborate mock castle display, featuring ramparts festooned with 2011 National Patient Safety Goals exhibited in middle ages motifs. “Our annual National Patient Safety Week provides the perfect opportunity to get command leadership, staff members and patients to interact and address key salient points in a new manner,” said Cmdr. Sally Butler, quality management officer-in-charge. “The entire week lets us focus on the National Patient Safety Goals with everyone.” The purpose of the National Patient Safety Goals is to promote specific improvements in patient safety. The goals focus on problem areas in health care safety and how to solve them. The Joint Commission approved the first set of NPSGs in July 2002.

Runners participate in St. Patrick Day Run

More than 100 service members, Department of Defense personnel and family members participated in a St. Patrick’s Day 5k/1 mile run hosted by the Fitness and Aquatics Center aboard Naval Base Kitsap, March 12. The annual event is a “personal-challenge” competition designed to motivate participants to strive for their own personal best run times. “It’s a great family event,” said Race Director Sylvia Terry. “It’s a fun and healthy way to spend your Saturday. It builds camaraderie amongst the participants and gives them a great sense of accomplishment.” Terry said the St. Patrick’s day run is one of four annual races hosted by the Bangor gym in which participants can challenge themselves and commands are able to earn points that go toward the annual Captain’s Cup event.

Women’s history breakfast shares courage, wisdom

More than 150 people attended the Women’s History Breakfast Celebration at the Kitsap Conference Center and Bremerton Harborside, March 11. The event’s theme, “Sharing the Courage and Wisdom,” was about recognizing the roles women have played in recent history. Coordinated by the Professional Women’s Employee Networking Group of PSNS & IMF, Bangor’s Women’s Networking Group, Keyport’s Federal Women’s Program and PSNS & IMF’s Women in Trades, the breakfast celebration featured guest speakers, Bremerton Mayor Patty Lent, and Amanda Sandberg, Boeing product review engineer. Jim Van Antwerp, technical director, Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Keyport Division, served as Master of Ceremonies. Van Antwerp shared his awe and inspiration on just how far women, in what used to be non-traditional trades and professions, have progressed through the years.

NHB salutes National Social Work Month

Naval Hospital Brem-erton recognized March as National Social Work Month with a command observation March 11. In conjunction with the National Association of Social Workers, this year’s theme is “Social Workers Change Futures.” Navy social workers use a variety of disciplines such as sociology, psychology, law, and medicine to solve social problems. Case work is a lot of their responsibilities and involves close cooperation with service members and/or their families who are under mental, physical, or social stressors. In times of crisis, social workers are often contacted to alleviate a potential dysfunctional situation or high risk situation. “As Navy social workers, we are here to take care of Sailors and their families,” said Lt. Jo Ann Martinez, Social Work Case Management department head. Martinez, along with Bruce Robertson, Laural Butler-Taylor, and Rangell Wallen, form NHB’s social work team.

NHB serves National Nutrition Month cuisine

Naval Hospital Bremerton is recognizing March as National Nutrition Month 2011 by offering healthy new menu options at the command’s dining facility. The culinary specialists and civilian counterparts of NHB’s Terrace Dining Room and Combined Food Operations, along with NHB’s Nutritional Management invited staff members and eligible beneficiaries to join them March 2 for the first of lunch-time planned meals in conjunction with the American Dietetic Association theme “Eat Right with Color.” Fish tacos and beef/broccoli stir fry were the initial entrees served. “We have an obligation as a military treatment facility to provide healthy choices and make sure they are available. It’s important for others to see that healthy food looks and tastes good by introducing new menu ideas and encouraging people to try them ,” said Cmdr. Kim Zuzelski, NHB Nutrition Management and Clinical Nutrition head. “Not that we haven’t provided healthy options before, but now we’re demonstrating that healthy eating does not mean that food is bland and doesn’t taste good. It’s actually showing them what’s acceptable here and not just talking about it and then hoping they do it on their own.”

Area captains recognized for community relations

Capt. Mark Brouker, Naval Hospital Bremerton commanding officer, has been recognized by the Bremerton Chamber of Commerce for the annual Chief Thunderbird Award, which honors people who exemplify outstanding leadership and commitment to the community. Along with Brouker, Capt. Mark Whitney of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility will also be honored for representation of the military in the greater Kitsap area. “I’m touched and honored to accept this on behalf of our entire command. But really, it’s our doctors, nurses, and especially our hospital corpsmen and support staff who always do the lion’s share of volunteering for any number of worthwhile opportunities,” said Brouker.
