Keyport event promotes heritage, hobbies, health

Civil service employees and active-duty military celebrated heritage, hobbies and health at the first annual H3 festival at the Keyport Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Aug. 19.
The H3 festival originated with diversity days, which promoted a range of different cultures and customs.
“We thought about it, and realized that there are a lot of types of diversity,” said Roger Bumpas, H3 event coordinator. “We decided to bring in people’s hobbies, and it just grew, until it was heritage, hobbies and health.”
Groups and individuals from Keyport and other surrounding areas set up booths for attendees to browse. The Peninsula Wilderness Club, Glass Odyssey Corvettes and Bonsai Culture were just a few of the organizations represented at H3.
“I’m passionate about my hobby and I enjoy sharing it with my co-workers,” said Martin Smith, who demonstrated his hobby of chainsaw carving at the festival. “This gave me an avenue to show the people I work with my artistic side.”
The event also featured free food, creative activities and resources on healthy living habits.
“H3 was fantastic, and I had a great time” said attendee Lindsey Sargeant. “It was nice for everyone to come out and support this event.”
Whether they were seeking a free burger, a new hobby or health advice, attendees had plenty to see and share. Keyport NUWC Commanding Officer Capt. Stephen Iwanowicz said that he considered the well-attended event a huge success (he estimated a turnout of more than 1,000) and was pleased with the way the H3 event came together.
“This is a great opportunity for us to learn more about ourselves, all the various facets of what each of us brings to the command,” said Iwanowicz. “It’s amazing to me, frankly, what hidden talents the workforce has. I learn about these things every day, and it makes me prouder than ever to be a part of this command.”
