Local naval installations, commands snag SECNAV awards

Several Navy Region Northwest Installations and Naval Base Kitsap tenant commands were recently announced as winners of 2010 Secretary of Navy (SECNAV) energy and water management awards.

Naval Base Kitsap, Naval Magazine (NAVMAG) Indian Island, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF) and Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Keyport all received recognition for outstanding energy and water conservation based on fiscal year 2009 accomplishments.

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus congratulated the winners in a memorandum dated Aug. 19, in which he stated the importance of energy and water management to the accomplishment of the Navy’s mission and our nation’s energy independence and security.

“We must all continue to be good stewards in our resources and treat them as the strategic asset they increasingly are,” said Mabus. “In the process, we will reduce consumption, waste less and free up spending to better support our warfighters at the tip of the spear.”

The award winners were categorized by size and type of facility or platform. Commands demonstrating platinum, gold or blue levels of achievement were recognized by award dollars, award ceremony recognition or award certificates based on the level of energy and water conservation demonstrated.

CNRNW Naval Installations NBK Bremerton, and NAVMAG Indian Island as well as senior tenant NUWC Keyport demonstrated a gold level of achievement, earning them a certificate of achievement and mention in the awards ceremony program.

Senior tenant command PSNS & IMF was named as the 2010 industrial facility winner for energy and water conservation. In turn, PSNS and IMF received 35,000 award dollars, and authorization to fly the SECNAV energy flag for a period of one year beginning Oct. 6, 2010.

The SECNAV Energy and Water Management Award Ceremony will be held Oct. 6, 2010 at the Navy Memorial in Washington, DC.
