TTF selects year’s top Sailors

Sonar Technician (Sub-marines) 1st Class Jonathon Carr is the TRIDENT Training Facility (TTF) Bangor 2010 Sailor of the Year (SOY), and Missile Technician (Submarines) 2nd Class Jordan Taylor is TTF’s Junior Sailor of the Year (JSOY).

Carr’s selection is coming on the heels of his recognition as TTF’s Sailor of the Quarter for the second and third Quarters of 2010.

Carr, an instructor in the Combat Systems Training Department, is a qualified Master Training Specialist, the Course Supervisor for 4 courses and Leading Petty Officer (LPO) for 11 instructors and 54 students, dedicating over 830 hours in the Submarine Multi-Mission Team Training (SMMTT) and Common Operational Advanced Employment Trainer (COAET) training 24 submarine crews on three different platforms—SSBN, SSGN and SSN.

He is also the LPO for the Modernization Training Team where he contributed more than 130 hours of at-sea and 270 hours of high caliber classroom training further ensuring maximum operational and Fleet readiness. Additionally, he conducted over 170 hours of exceptional training for Fleet Schools and “C” school personnel. His outstanding instructor and mentor abilities were noted by Senior Leadership, selecting him to conduct 672 man-hours of Petty Officer Indoctrination to newly frocked E4’s and E5’s, as well as devoting 288 man-hours to the Command Training Team.

“The biggest challenge for me here at TTF, coming from an SSN, was getting to know the differences between the way things are done on an SSN and the way things are done on an SSBN or SSGN,” said Carr.  “Another challenge was going from the ‘being evaluated’ mindset to be the evaluator.”

Outside of his primary duties as an instructor at TTF, Carr’s collateral duties include serving as the command assistance individual augmentee (IA) coordinator where he assisted with six staff and three students’ transition from deployment.

Taylor, as the Strategic Weapons Systems Formal Schools leading petty officer, is directly responsible for the maintenance and delivery of 11 advanced training courses for the missile technician rating which provide an annual throughput of 700 expertly trained technicians.

“There are a limited number of incentives to assure top performance in the military in terms of financial rewards or personal recognition and the SOY program is an important positive reinforcement,” said Taylor.  “If I am going to progress in my career, increased visibility/scrutiny is an inevitable part of the process. I welcome the early opportunity to experience this challenge.”

A master training specialist and member of the command training team, Taylor actively engages newly reporting personnel and sets the bar of expectations very high for them.  His thirst for excellence has yet to be quenched.

“I believe my recognition as SOY means a doubling of effort in the year after receiving the award,” he said.
