Sound Publishing has an immediate opening for an entry-level General Worker in the post pressroom.  This position will be based in Lakewood, WA. The position is full-time including benefits.Under the direction of the Insert Machine Operator and/or Stitcher/Trimmer Operator the Post-Press General Worker will participate in the preparation of inserted packages, mailing units or stitched/trimmed products for distribution/delivery to Circulation Departments, mail houses, Post Offices, printers or client businesses.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Work as part of the Post Press team to insert, label, or stitch/trim products for delivery to our printing customers. Must have the ability to reliably lift 45 pounds repetitively, have normal eye/hand coordination and no physical limitations.  Must keep up with the machine speed and properly place insert product into hopper to limit misfeeds and jams.  Must be able to operate manual and electric pallets jacks and lift jacks.  Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.  Must demonstrate team attitude, work without prompting, and help co-workers.  General housekeeping will be maintained by all team members.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Perform preparatory tasks prior to insert run. The General Worker will help the Machine Operator stage insert product. Staging involves pulling pallets of inserted product to the appropriate hopper around the machine, removing shrink-wrap, removing top caps (either cardboard or wood), cutting strapping (both metal and plastic) and disposing of removed materials and collecting caps for recycling. In addition, the pallet tags will be collected and placed by the hopper for each insert. The General Worker must be able to utilize a knife and metal cutters.
  2. Perform inserting operations. Inserting operations involves feeding hoppers on three different styles of inserting machines. Based on the type of insert, the General Worker will be required to feed multiple hoppers on a given run. The hopper feeder will be required to keep up with the machine speed, properly place insert product into hopper to limit misfeeds and jams. The General Worker needs to insure insert product is appropriately jogged, placed in the correct orientation for feeding into the inserted product face up and notifies the Machine Operator if problems occur with the feeding or the insert is about to run out. In addition, the General Worker must be able to move additional pallets into position and utilize lift jacks to assist with feeding. When necessary, the General Worker will perform hand-inserting.
  3. Perform stacking operations. As inserted products are delivered from Inserting Machines the General Worker will be required to strap bundles, place the strapped bundles on appropriate pallets utilizing the required stacking pattern. While stacking, the General Worker is responsible for ensuring that pallets are sized according to pallet tags, and pallet tags are placed on each pallet. In addition, the stacking General Worker may be required to place topsheets, pull office copies and tag them correctly.
  4. Perform post-inserting tasks. The General Worker will be required to recover rejects. Recovering rejects involves removing inserts from products, sorting those inserts and returning them to appropriate hoppers. In addition, the General Worker will participate in clean-up of area. All hoppers will be emptied, extra inserts stacked on pallets, damaged product collected and recycled, pallet tags collected and given to Machine Operator. Pallets will be removed for storage/recycling; cardboard boxes broken down and taken to cardboard bailer; cardboard layer dividers sorted and collected for reuse. The caged areas on the gripper conveyor will be cleaned out; this requires notifying the Machine Operator that this task is being done and the machine must not be active. All stacked pallets will be shrink-wrapped and staged for loading. All office copies are collected and distributed to appropriate areas. All mailed copies are separated and after labeling, bagged and distributed.
  5. Perform labeling tasks. Under the direction of the Labeling Machine Operator, the General Worker will feed papers into the Labeling Machine hopper; retrieve labeled papers from the conveyor and prepare bundles according to mailing specifications. The bundles will be double tied and either placed in bags, postal carts or on postal pallets. Completed mailings will be staged for load-out.
  6. Perform stitching/trimming tasks. Under the direction of the Stitcher/Trimmer Operator the General Worker will feed hoppers on the stitcher/trimmer, retrieve bundles from the stacker, strap bundles and place on pallets. In addition, the General Worker will help stage products around machine, clean-up area, place topsheets and pallet tags, wrap skids and stage skids for load-out. The General Worker will also assist with single-knife trimming on a cutting machine.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITY: Must have ability to take direction, and understand basic machine feeding requirements.

The noise level is moderate but can be noisy at times.

WORK SCHEDULE

It must be recognized that due to the nature of this position, hours will vary in order to accomplish the required tasks and may require coming in early, staying late, or working weekends on occasion.  It is critical that the person in this position be reliable.
