The North Kitsap Herald won third place in the 2012 Local Media Association Newspaper of the Year contest.
The Local Media Association, formerly known as Suburban Newspapers of America, is a non-profit, professional trade association specifically serving the suburban and community newspaper industry. It has more than 2,000 member newspapers in the U.S. and Canada.
The Herald competed in Class B, for non-daily newspapers with 10,001-22,500 circulation. The Longboat Observer in Longboat Key, Fla., won first place. The Maryland Independent in Waldorf, Md., won second.
Of the Herald, judges wrote, “This is clearly a must-read paper, with strong stories on a public shooting and the end [to] a ferry subsidy. Tough stories shoulder next to features on teachers — and that’s just what a local newspaper is supposed to do. There is a strong ROP advertising presence of local retailers and services, which make this a must-have publication for ads and editorial.”
The Joplin Globe in Joplin, Mo., and The Sioux City Journal in Sioux City, Iowa were the top winners in the daily newspaper categories.
The North Kitsap Herald has been the local news source for Poulsbo and the communities of North Kitsap since 1901.
