JOB SUMMARY:

Delivery of printed material produced at the Lakewood Plant to Sound Publishing Warehouses, Offices, and Parking Lots as instructed in Western Washington.  Delivery of printed commercial jobs within the same areas as instructed.  Pick up of recycle materials, skids, inserts, etc from Sound Publishing offices and warehouses as instructed.  Possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license.  Maintain and obey all traffic laws.  Display a pleasant business attitude to fellow employees, customers, and the general public.  Present a neat and clean appearance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Must have a current Driver’s License.  Must safely drive on all types of roads, in varying traffic conditions and in all types of weather.  Must obey all traffic laws and maintain a good driving record.  Must be able to lift 50 pounds.  Must drive in a courteous and professional manner.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Pre trip vehicle by checking fluids, tires, leaks, and all lights to be in working condition.  Follow Pre-trip Inspection procedures.  Clean all mirrors, and glass prior to driving.  Maintain vehicle in a neat and clean condition, washing assigned vehicle weekly as needed.  Fill out Vehicle Inspection Report at beginning of day.
  2. Check each day schedule of deliveries as what paper or commercial job is going out for the day.  Check board by transportation office for any extra commercial deliveries for the week. Check individual slots for paperwork.  Make sure you have correct address, maps and/or what ever is needed for delivery of each job.  Check with Transportation Manager to ensure all deliveries have been posted and/or if you have any pick ups before your return to plant.  Have all paperwork, Bill of Ladings, Mail Delivery paperwork, etc, with you before your departure.
  3. Count each skid and double check all Bill of Ladings for each job before loading vehicle.  Back truck up to loading area.  Load truck with products set for you do deliver.  Secure load with bars and/or straps.  Make sure all skids are secure.  Close and Lock down roll up door.  Deliver all newspapers, printed product, and commercial jobs that have been assigned to you in a timely manner.  Be aware of deadline times for each publication and arrive to destination on or before time.  If you will be running late due to traffic problems, call Transportation Manager and/or Circulation Manager of paper you are delivering so that they know you are running late.  Pick up any recycle, skids, or inserts that have been pre-arranged by Transportation Manager at warehouse or office location.  Greet and maintain a pleasant business attitude at all offices and commercial locations.  Maintain a professional attitude while driving.
  4. Before returning to Plant at end of day, fuel vehicle for next run out.  Finish Vehicle Inspection report at end of shift.  If you change trucks in the middle of your day you must fill out a new vehicle inspection report for each truck you drive.
  5. At end of shift, clean out vehicle and have it ready for next day’s delivery.   Clean out the box of the truck by removing all skids, cardboard, misc, etc from box.   Remove all pop cans, water bottles, garbage, clip boards, etc that do not belong in the cab.  Report any problems or vehicle defects to Transportation Manager.  Park vehicle in appropriate location. Secure and lock all doors and windows.
  6. Post –trip your vehicle by checking for any defects such as fluid leaks, tires, glass, lights and reflectors.  Keep track of when oil change for vehicle is due and let Transportation Manager know if it is time for service.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned.

GENERAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Must have basic understanding of Western Washington roads.
  • Must be a professional driver, have a valid driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk, use hands to grasp/manipulate steering wheel, and reach with arms and hands. Driver will be expected to lift up to 50 lbs. using repetitive lifting and bending/twisting motions.
  • Must be able to talk clearly and hear in order to communicate with employees and customers.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, the ability to adjust focus, the ability to read and the ability to follow written and verbal directions.
  • Must be mobile and able to drive.

WORK SCHEDULE

Typically, 30-40 hours per week, hours vary depending on work needing to be done, including weekend work.  It must be recognized that, due to the nature of this position, hours will vary due to weather and traffic conditions, and may require extra driving time to deliver or pick up commercial jobs and/or company needs such as furniture moving.  It is critical that the person in this position be reliable and flexible.
