The Juneau Empire, a division of Sound Publishing, Inc. is looking for a Reporter to cover the never-dull world of state government in Alaska. The Juneau Empire strives to balance being a community paper for a vibrant city of about 32,000 with providing focused coverage of state government in Alaska. Even when the Alaska State Legislature isn’t in session, there are always elections on the horizon, ongoing policy debate and enterprise stories worth pursuing that make this beat a priority.

An ideal candidate should be able to: 

  • File thoughtful, thorough articles to keep readers both in Juneau and throughout the state apprised of happenings at the Alaska State Capitol.

  • Identify impactful stories with a statewide impact.

  • Make it easy for people in Juneau to understand how policy and statewide happenings affect life for those living in the capital city and Southeast Alaska.

  • Be willing to occasionally work on assignments outside of their usual beat.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in journalism and two or more years of experience at a daily newspaper or similar experience.

  • The ability to shoot quality photos and video.

  • Strong news judgment and journalistic ethics.

  • Understanding of open records laws, and the ability to file records requests.

  • A strong ability to engage with both readers and sources via social media.

Work Schedule:

Typically, Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm; however, hours and days will vary in order to accomplish the required tasks and may require coming in early, staying late, or working weekends on occasion. It is critical that the person in this position be both reliable and flexible.

ABOUT US –The Empire is a 5,000-circulation newspaper that is printed 5 days a week in a remote but close-knit community of 32,000 people nestled in the heart of the Tongass National Forest, temperate rainforest and the largest national forest in North America. In addition to covering the annual legislative session, the newspaper also covers Alaska’s billion-dollar oil and gas industry, multi-million dollar fisheries, as well as community issues, ranging from homelessness and the heroin epidemic to mining and climate change.
